The Navajo Nation. The Code Talkers. With Gratitude.
In spite of broken treaties and broken promises,
the Navajo Nation honored its pledge
to defend the United States.
The Warrior tradition manifest:
protecting its people, the land, and its communities.
Recruited by the U.S. Marine Corps,
29 Navajo men crafted an unbreakable code,
a code never deciphered by the Japanese.
They conveyed coded messages
in all Marine assaults from 1942 to 1945
and were critical to the taking of Iwo Jima.
Brilliant and brave,
the Code Talkers helped to win World War II.
Significantly.
In 2001 the Navajo and other code talkers
received the Congressional Gold Medal.
Finally.
For fashioning a code that saved lives and
for demonstrating selfless commitment
to the protection of the United States.
Navajo Code Talkers,
With the deepest Gratitude,
Thank you for your service.
